Tour Details

Stok Kangri is the highest peak in the Stok region of Ladakh. At a height of 6153 Meters (or 20187 ft.), it offers an ultimate climbing/trekking experience. One can view a lot of high peaks (mostly 7000 Meters+) from Stok summit but the highlight is the K2 peak which is also visible on a clear day. Stok Kangri Trek does not involve a technical climb but it requires a good fitness level. Wanderers team ensures highest safety standards for all the trekkers and also do multiple briefing sessions for the trekkers attempting Stok Kangri.

Stok Kangri is attempted by trekkers and enthusiasts from around the world. The base camp is at a height of 5000 Meters and serves as the base camp for both Stok Kangri as well as Gulep Kangri. Reaching the base camp is a gradual ascend for most part through the camp locations of Changma and Mankarmo. It is the summit day from the Base Camp that is challenging and needs good fitness level for someone attempting it.

Ladakh region offers some amazing trekking options from Leh. One can attempt for Chadar Trek, Markha Valley Trek, Sham Valley Trek, Stok Kangri Trek as well as Kang Yatse II.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Leh, check-in

Flights coming into Leh land before noon. We land into Leh and drive straight to the hotel/Home Stay and have lunch. The same afternoon we will do a briefing on the map for the route. The day is for acclimatization so we take it easy and hydrate ourselves.

Day 2 Explore local markets and back to hotel

We explore the local markets and return back to the hotel in the second half. We have a team briefing to discuss the entire trek in detail. If some things need to be bought, it could be done in the first half when we visit the market. We will also give a demo of how to pack and what all to pack.

Day 3 Leh to stok village to Changma (11,500 ft – 11,800 ft – 13,100 ft) (06kms trek/ 5hours)

Today we start with the drive from Leh to stok village. This is a 30-40mins drive crossing through the road that leads to the Hemis monastery. We reach the starting point of our trek that is the Stok Village. We take the trail to our right and start with a gentle ascend. We trek for 15 to 20mins and reach a cemented hotel and home stay accommodation. Another hour of gradual ascend and we climb a zig-zag steep patch of about 300 metres to reach a mountain top. This top has the Tibetan prayer flags to welcome you. We take a breather of 10mins here, enjoy the views and click some pictures. After that, we continue trekking for a couple of hours to reach our first campsite – Changma.

Day 4Changma to Mankarmo (13,100 ft – 14,200 ft) (3.5 kms/ 4hours)

We start from Changma on the right ridge. It is a steep ascend to the ridge which takes 45mins to an hour. We rest for a few mins and continue our trek. We continue downhill for 30mins and reach the trail over the stones. From here we will see sharp edged mountains all around. From here we trek a gradual ascend over stones all the way till our next campsite- Mankarmo. It takes a total of 4hours to get to Mankarmo from Changma.

Day 5Mankarmo to Stok base (14,200 feet – 16,350 feet) (4.5kms/ 4 – 5hours)

From Mankarmo, we start the trek trek to Stok base. Today’s trek is straight from Mankarmo. After about an hour of trekking, we take a left turn into the valley. From here we have a couple of gentle ascends and descends to reach the foot of the hill on which is the Stok base. Right here, many trekkers have spotted the Himalayan Marmots and Blue Sheeps. We climb right above the hill and see the cemented structure with the Tibetan prayer flags. Another 15mins of walk from these flags and we reach the Stok base.

Day 6 & 7Stok base to Stok Kangri summit back to base (16,350 feet – 20,150 feet) (14kms/ 10-11hours)

On 6th day of the trek, we wake up by 7 am and have breakfast. Today we do an acclimatization walk to the ridge on the right side. This is a 45mins walk with a steep ascends. We can also continue to trek further ahead till the advanced base camp. This ridge walk is the same route that leads to the Summit. Sometimes we get airtel network at this top. We spend about 15mins here and get back to the base. On any clear day we would be able to see the Stok kangri right in front of us and our base camp right behind us from this top. We get back to the base for lunch followed by a brief about things to be carried during the night. We rest in our tents till evening. Have an early dinner and relax. We wake up by 11pm, get ready and leave for the Summit. We reach the same top over the ridge in about 45mins, take a breather and continue to trek. From this top we trek over a gentle ascend for about a couple of hours to reach the foot of the glacier. From the glacier we start the climb to reach the final ridge that takes us straight to the summit. This ridge walk is about 300 to 400 metres however it is extremely windy making it tough to negotiate. We reach the top of the Summit at 20,150 feet by 7am. We spend 30mins here enjoying the views and click some pictures and retrace our steps back to the base. Getting down to the base would be equally tiring and exerting. We reach base, hydrate ourselves, have our meals and rest for the remaining day.

Day 8 Stok base to Mankarmo to Changma (16,350 feet – 14,200 feet – 13,100 feet) (8kms/ 5-6hours)

We start from the stok base and descend straight to Changma. Because we are losing altitude and gaining oxygen, we start feeling more energetic. We rest at Changma for the day.

Day 9Changma to Stok village to Leh (13,100 feet – 11,800 feet – 11,500 feet) (6kms/ 3- 4hours)

We trek from Changma to Leh for about 3 to 4 hours ending our trek at Stok village. From Stok village we drive back to Leh and reach our accommodation in about 45 mins to an hour. We have a closing ceremony by the evening and have a gala dinner and call it a night.
